Local body elections were held on Saturday in four main towns in the state. Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress was re-elected to power, solidifying its hold on the state almost a year after her resounding triumph in the state election. With poll strategist Prashant Kishor’s group caught in the heart of an internal battle between Mamata Banerjee supporters and her nephew Abhishek Banerjee, the party is already battling to recover from this defeat.
The Trinamool party came out on top in the west Bengal municipal election result held in Siliguri, Bidhannagar (a Kolkata satellite city), Chandannagar, and Asansol.
Ma, Mati, and Manush have triumphed once again. In a tweet, Mamata Banerjee thanked the voters of Asansol, Bidhannagar, Siliguri, and Chandanagore, extending her heartfelt congratulations to them for having chosen the All India Trinamool Congress candidates for the municipal corporation elections.
Ma, Mati, and Manush have triumphed yet again.
The voters in the west Bengal municipal election result in Asansol, Bidhannagar, Siliguri, and Chandanagore have my deepest congratulations for their unwavering support of the All India Trinamool Congress.
With 39 out of 41 seats, the Trinamool annihilated its opponents in Bidhannagar, while the BJP and CPI(M) failed to secure a single seat. Two seats were allocated to an independent and one to the Congress.
The Trinamool secured 31 out of 32 seats in Chandernagore, with the CPI(M) securing one ward. Furthermore, with 37 out of 47 seats, the party managed to oust the CPI(M)-led Left Front from the Siliguri Municipal Corporation. The Left won four seats, while the BJP won five, putting them in third place. Just one seat went to the Congress.
While the Trinamool was ahead in five wards and received 66 out of 106 seats in Asansol, the BJP received five, the CPI(M) two, and the Congress two in west Bengal municipal election result.
In an unprecedented turn of events, election authorities determined the victor by drawing lots after the tallying in Asansol, which produced a deadlock. An election official would put the names of the two candidates tied into a jar and then draw a slip to determine the victor. The TMC candidate Asha Prasad was proclaimed the victor following the draw.
The Chief Minister of Bengal announced the appointment of Gautam Deb as mayor of Siliguri.
Trinamool has yet to decide who will be mayor of the other three corporations. In Bidhannagar, for example, hopefuls Sabyasachi Dutta and Krishna Chakraborty are vying for the position. Campaigning for the position of mayor has begun for both of these individuals.
Krishna Chakraborty and Sabyasachi Dutta met with Mamata Banerjee and her nephew Abhishek Banerjee.
The civic polls provide more confirmation for Mamata Banerjee of her party’s supremacy in Bengal following last year’s phenomenal assembly elections, in which it defeated the BJP by a massive margin and essentially erased the presence of the Congress and the Left.
However, her relationship with Prashant Kishor, who helped secure the west Bengal municipal election result, has deteriorated. The civic polls candidate lists were one cause; the party produce two lists, each with its candidates, and Mamata Banerjee felt pressured to support the group she saw as the old guard.
On voting day, there were a few hiccups. The BJP staged protests at multiple locations in response to allegations of poll violence and electoral malpractices. Dilip Ghosh, a former state BJP president and current member of parliament, also led a dharna. On this matter, the BJP also intends to take legal action.
There was no violence, the state administration said, and all disturbances were dealt with promptly.
Claiming that their voters were denied the opportunity to cast a ballot, the BJP has levelled serious allegations of electoral malpractices. After becoming the main opposition party in last year’s assembly Local Body Elections, the BJP may be disappoint with the outcome. The Left has regained ground in several of its former strongholds.
On February 27, 108 municipalities will hold their Local Body Elections. Many of these municipalities were originally due earlier but were postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
